Day 8: Classroom Experience & Visit to Reptile House & Hong Kong Wetland Park

This morning, we attended an English lesson. For the first time, we could actually completely understand the lesson. In the Social Studies lesson, we learnt about the healthcare system in Hong Kong and we understood the differences between Singapore’s healthcare system and that of Hong Kong’s. The teacher asked us to share our knowledge with the class.

After lunch, we went to The Reptile House in Tuen Mun Park. There were many interesting reptiles there like the spiny-tailed lizard and an unique-looking chameleon that only move its eyes for the entire period we were there. We almost thought that they were not real, as their bodies were not moving.

Next, we visited the Hong Kong Wetland Park. It was a beautiful place that is peaceful and serene with both migratory and resident birds flying around. We went to the observation decks and used the telescopes to have a close-up view of the birds and we saw a lot of egrets and ducks. Inside the enclosed area, we saw many corals and fish that were not found in Singapore. This Hongkong Wetland Park is similar to the Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve in Singapore, with many species of birds residing in natural habitat. We also watched a video on conservation and the protection efforts of the wetlands in the different countries. The video was very educational as it make us more aware of the importance of conserving these wetlands.

We then went to have our dinner in a seafood restaurant.

Day 6: Classroom Experience & Visit to Cheung Chau Island and the Victoria Peak

Today’s physical education lesson was a memorable one as we learnt ‘yoga’ for warm-ups. The first half of the lesson was theoretical stuff on how to keep fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle. During the second half of the lesson, the boys and girls were segregated and did different activities like playing badminton or basketball.

In the afternoon, we took a ferry to Cheung Chau Island which is a good 45 minutes away from the jetty. We visited the Pak Tai Temple which was built in 1783 to honour a popular Taoist God of the Sea. We were then given time to walk around the island which is filled with shops selling dried foodstuff, seafood, vegetables, clothes, bags, shoes and accessories.
We tried some of the cooked food such as fish balls, red bean cakes, peanut and fish-shaped waffle. We enjoyed the food a lot.

The Victoria Peak

After dinner, we were driven up to the Victoria Peak to have a fascinating night view of the skyscrapers of Hong Kong. The view was breathtaking and it was cool up there. The tour guide told us that the houses build on the hill of the Victoria Peak are very expensive as it has a very nice view. We also took pictures at the entrance of the Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum.

Day 7: School Experience & Visit to Historical, Science and Space Museums

After school, we went to the Science, Space and History Museums and Mr. Lai took a lot of pictures with and of us. At the History Museum, we got to see many interesting things that cannot be found in Singapore. There were many exhibits showing the very old scene of the past. For example, showing the old shops like medical shops, barber and herbal tea shops. There were other interesting exhibits such as the exhibit showcasing the fisherfolk and their livelihood on the boat. The exhibits were very interesting, engaging and looked very real. From the museum, we also got to know about the changes in Hong Kong from Devonian Period 400 million years ago and conclude with the return of sovereignty of the territory to China in 1997.

At the Science Museum, we had a lot of fun trying out the different experiments and effects. There was one experiment that we had to put our fingers on a button and feel a slight electric shock. Mr. Lai tried it and surprisingly, he did not have any reaction from it. Another experiment that we tried showed us that electricity could pass through our bodies. About six of us, including Mr Lai, tried it out. We experimented by holding hands, putting our fingers together, touching the clothes and even our hair! Two people had to “hold” the ‘hand’ of the machine and we will see the light bulb light up.

Lastly we went to the Avenue of Stars. At the Avenue of Stars, we met some of our buddies who specially came to see us. We walked around and chatted while we waited for the light show to start. We saw some square areas of land that had the handprints and signatures of famous Hong Kong artists. We even saw a statue of Bruce Lee! The light show started soon and laser and lights shined in the night sky in beat with the music played.

I really enjoyed the music played. After the show, we realized we were late for the bus. Not only that, we were pretty far from the meeting place too, so we ran all the way back to the bus. Luckily we were not forgotten and managed to reach the bus.
